Jayla is my first fursona. She came into being through an incredibly fortuitious accident. She's a jackalope, which are hands down my favorite cryptids. I've struggled with how to conceptualize her, and my latest thought is as perhaps a representation of my inner adult. I'd like to purchase more art of her (of course).

Below are the art pieces I have commissioned of her and the original descriptions I wrote when I posted them on FurAffinity, as well as some current (2026) reflections.

Original Description

This really wonderful sketch was a stream freebie done by the talented takeo.

While looking at anthro art on the internet one day, I stumbled across FurAffinity for the first time. In the recent submissions section I saw this super cute orcadog that said "Now Streaming." I clicked through to the artist's Picarto channel, and found them drawing. Suitably impressed, I stayed to watch. Eventually they told their viewers to pick a number between 1 and 50. You might see where this is going, but I did not. I thought they were deciding what color to add, or something of that nature.

"50!" I typed enthusiastically, deciding I would pick the color red if I won. They pulled a random number generator into view, displaying the number 50.

"50. You won, give me your reference sheet."

Panic. Not only did I not have even one measly sketch of a fursona, I had not ever thought of having a fursona, or what they would look like.

"Umm, I don't have a reference sheet." Luckily for me, Takeo. is a very patient individual, and as I awkwardly explained they offered to do a private stream for me sometime and draw my fursona from a description.

"Just note me when have a description."

Uh. What's a note?

I'm happy to report that this tale has a very happy ending. After deliberating for the better part of the week, I decided on a female jackalope. That Saturday Takeo helped me finish her design and drew Jayla for me. And that's how I accidentally won my fursona.

Reflection

That story is completely true. I'm delighted that my transition from "lurking on FurAffinity" to "having a fursona" happened in less than a week, thanks to an incredibly generous (and patient) artist. I'd been "furry curious" before and aware of the existence of furries for years, but had genuinely never considered making my own fursona.

I settled on a jackalope after seriously thinking about an Appaloosa unicorn. At the last moment I realized "oh, of course, she should be a jackalope."

Original Description

This wonderful commission was done by Literal-Ghost in February 2019 of my character Jayla and my dear friend sun's Eriviara. I love this piece as it so embodies our friendship. Jayla and Eri's expressions are my absolute favorite.

Reflection

This piece was a YCH, a "your character here" where an artist sketches out an image/scene and purchasers can have the details filled in with their character(s). I saw it and asked my friends suns if his elf Eri would mind hanging out with my jackalope. It's such a sweet piece and I really love both their expressions.

This awesome commission of Jayla on a hot summer's day was done by devie. I might be stuck at home, but thankfully my characters don't need to isolate

Reflection

Ah yes, the COVID piece, commissioned around July 2020. I saw the YCH and decided to experiment with how I wanted to portray Jayla. Its definitely a bit sexier than my other commissions, but I am glad I experimented.

Original Description

This beautiful illustration of Jayla was done by Mergremil of -SODA-. I love how they brought her to life! I realized after the piece was done I’d never decided on a color for Jayla’s eyes (and managed to accidentally avoid addressing with other commissions) and thanks to Mergremil they’re now pink. I wouldn’t have thought of that, but I love it!

Reflection

This is great. Another YCH, and where Jayla got her pink eyes and crescent moon necklace (and I love the dress).
